Structural & Engineering Details

How This Structure Works

An open-ended tray is a sleeve-style structure open at one or both ends, so product slides in from the side rather than dropping in from the top. The tube-like geometry guides the item into place quickly and keeps it framed within the sleeve, which can speed tidy loading on a line. With the ends open, the box presents the product profile and can pair with a separate tray or insert. It can suit items that slide neatly into a fitted sleeve, keeping assembly to inserting the product and, if needed, closing an end. Folding flat before use, it forms into the sleeve for side loading.

Good Fit For

  • Products that slide in from the side
  • Sleeve-and-insert pairings
  • Quick, tidy line loading

Key Advantages

  • Side loading speeds tidy filling
  • Sleeve frames the product profile
  • Pairs with a tray or insert

Assembly & Construction

The blank folds into a tube or sleeve, glued or locked at a seam, with one or both ends left open so the product slides in from the side. There are no top flaps to fold, so assembly is forming the sleeve and inserting the item, then closing an end if the design calls for it. Packers square the sleeve and slide product in, so loading stays quick and the item sits framed within the open-ended body.

Materials & Board Options

A firm, printable paperboard suits open-ended sleeves where the tube must hold shape as product slides through. Heavier items can point to a corrugated grade for support. Final board, any flute, and coating typically depend on the contents weight, sleeve size, print, how product is inserted, and handling, so a loaded sample usually confirms the sleeve holds its shape during side loading.

Pre-Production Planning Checklist

  • Confirm the sleeve holds shape as product slides through
  • Check the open-end fit seats the product cleanly
  • Verify the seam suits your gluing or locking method
